Biblical Theology of Suffering

Most Western Christians have a very poor theology of suffering, which works against them since life is filled with suffering that cannot be avoided. Having a biblical understanding of this particular concept is quite freeing and actually creates an environment that allows one to be in suffering and do well. Some of the concepts are listed below.


What does this mean for me?


1. The importance of having an eternal perspective.

2. The resurrection of Christ is proof that suffering will come to an end.

3. God did not exempt Himself from suffering.

4. Promises that we will have to suffer (the cross).

5. The purpose of suffering is to draw us closer to God.

6. The purpose of suffering is to motivate us to overcome sin.

7. The purpose of suffering is for discipline and refinement.

8. Suffering is not an experience to avoid.

9. Suffering is not an experience to have to understand, but trust in God’s goodness.

10. Suffering if responded to biblically actually builds endurance and patience.

11. Suffering creates depth and breadth to an individual.

12. Suffering releases the character of Christ within the individual.

13. Suffering promotes humility.

14. No one is exempted from suffering.

15. Suffering was introduced into humanity the moment Adam and Eve sinned.

16. Suffering is a crucial ingredient to being able to live life to the full – get the most out of life.
